There are many potential causes of upper back pain. The upper bank consists of many different structures and conditions vary which can affect it. The upper back is the skeletal structure commonly known as the thoracic cage. This structure consists of the 12 vertebrae and their corresponding ribs that connect to the breastbone. The thoracic cage provides protection for the major organs of the body. Generally, this is a fairly stable area but certain conditions can cause discomfort.
The spinal column is designed to provide support to the body and must also maintain its flexibility. The upper back actually experiences very little movement. The neck and the lower back tend to move more than the upper back.

There is a section of your lower back which consists of five cervical discs. This area is often called the lumbar. The lumbar must maintain its flexibility to act as a shock absorber for impacts to the body. These cervical discs are connected by soft tissue. The soft tissue must retain its flexibility to be effective.
We are more susceptible to problems in the lower back as we age. This is compounded by the changes in our work habits. Many of our work hours are spent sitting in fixed positions. This is especially true for those who work on computers.
The lower back relies on its strength in its ability to be flexible. The elasticity of the ligaments, tendons and muscles between the discs is critical. The other critical element is strength. Knee joint pain can also come from disease rather than trauma. A common disease affecting the knee is arthritis which can be either rheumatoid, an immune condition, or osteoarthritis, which is degeneration of the cartilage in the knee. Infections or tumors in this joint are rare.
